Sprinter DPF Cleaning: DIY Regen Versus A Professional Clean

Updated 2026-05-25

A long highway drive can complete a passive Sprinter DPF regen if the filter is only lightly loaded and no fault is stored. A plugged filter, frequent regens, or a stored fault needs a professional forced regen or an off-vehicle bake-clean, which a DIY drive cannot fix.

When a drive is enough

If the van only needs to complete a regen cycle, sustained highway speed with no active fault can finish it. Short city routes prevent regens and let soot build.

When it needs a forced regen

Once the filter is heavily loaded or a fault is stored, the van will not self-clean. We command a forced regen with Xentry or remove and bake-clean the filter.

Preventing the next clog

Address the cause, whether that is an EGR fault, injector issue, or a lifetime of short trips, so the DPF does not plug again.
