Sprinter Repair Glossary
Sprinter and diesel terms in plain language, so you understand what your van and your invoice are actually talking about.
- AdBlue / DEF
- Diesel Exhaust Fluid, a urea solution injected into the exhaust to reduce NOx emissions. Low level or bad quality triggers warnings and start countdowns.
- BlueTEC
- Mercedes name for its clean-diesel emissions system that combines DEF, an SCR catalyst, and a DPF.
- Conductor plate
- The electrical hub inside the Sprinter automatic transmission. A common failure that causes limp mode and shift faults, usually repairable without a full rebuild.
- DPF
- Diesel Particulate Filter, which traps soot from the exhaust and periodically burns it off in a regeneration cycle. It clogs from short trips or a fault.
- EGR
- Exhaust Gas Recirculation, a valve that routes some exhaust back into the intake to lower emissions. It clogs with carbon over time.
- eSprinter
- The all-electric Sprinter, which uses a high-voltage battery and needs HV-certified service rather than general auto repair.
- Glow plugs
- Heating elements that warm the diesel cylinders for cold starts. Failed plugs cause slow, rough cold starting.
- HPFP
- High-Pressure Fuel Pump, which pressurizes fuel for the common-rail injectors. Weak pressure causes long cranks and stalling.
- Limp mode
- A protective reduced-power state the Sprinter enters when it detects a fault. It means a stored code that needs a scan.
- NOx sensor
- A sensor that measures nitrogen oxides in the exhaust to control the emissions system. A failed sensor triggers DEF and emissions faults.
- OM642 / OM651 / OM654
- Mercedes diesel engine families used across Sprinter generations. Each has its own known service points.
- SCN coding
- Online Software Calibration Number coding through Mercedes Xentry, required to activate new modules, keys, and some parts.
- SCR
- Selective Catalytic Reduction, the catalyst that uses DEF to convert NOx into harmless gases.
- Service A / Service B
- Mercedes alternating maintenance services. A is lighter (oil and inspection); B is more thorough and adds items like the fuel filter.
- Turbo actuator
- The component that adjusts the variable-geometry turbo. When it sticks, the van loses power and can enter limp mode.
- Xentry
- The official Mercedes diagnostic system used to scan, test, code, and calibrate Sprinter control modules.
- 7G / 9G-Tronic
- Mercedes 7-speed and 9-speed automatic transmissions used in Sprinters, each needing specific fluid and service.
